Why is my kerosene red?

Kerosene is commonly dyed red or other colors by manufacturers. This coloring serves as a fiscal marker, allowing governments to distinguish it from untaxed heating oil or highly taxed road diesel. The dye helps tax authorities identify fuel intended for specific uses, ensuring proper taxes are collected. Solvent Red 19 is a frequently used dye for this purpose.
