What is a furr down?

A furr down (also known as a furred down ceiling) is a lowered section of a ceiling. Its primary purpose is to conceal mechanical elements such as ductwork, plumbing, or electrical wiring that run within the ceiling space. Often found in kitchens, bathrooms, or hallways, these dropped sections can also accommodate recessed lighting or add architectural interest.
